What You Will Learn- you will learn how to estimate sums and differences of decimals
Mini Lesson- There is not one correct answer when estimating. Estimating means to find an close value. Another type of estimation is front - end estimation. When you use this kind of estimation you add or subtract the digits of the two highest place values. Then you add or subtract the digits in the next place value position. (Watch slide show for example problems on front end estimation, and the picture below is also an example.) Only the front numbers can be more than 10. If the last numbers are, don't use front-end estimation, use regular estimation.
Why do you use estimation? You use estimation to get an answer quicker. Usually you use estimation when you are doing problems in your head. You use front end estimation usually when the front numbers are ten and over and when the back numbers are are nine and less. Websites
